We often use the words ‘mind-body healing’ in the Portland world of alternative medicine. We learn in this field that you can’t separate the mind from the body. There is clear evidence that emotions affect physical health and physical health impacts our emotional states. Consider that chronic illness and pain can lead to states of depression, and chronic emotional stress can lead to high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer and auto-immune disease.

Portlanders are hungry. Salivating for more national, and even international sports recognition. Trailblazers are “rising” vying for a title. Major league soccer is preparing to make its debut in the city which includes new facilities for the Timbers. Sporting activities in our parks and gymnasiums have the variety of a box of chocolates; roller derby, kickball, and rock climbing to name a few.

It’s not news that each one of us leaves behind a visible trail of debris throughout our lifetime known as our carbon footprint. Stress is a normal condition we all experience. Stress is not necessarily a “good” or “bad” thing, what really matters is how we handle stress. Possibly one of the more stressful issues our community has encountered has been the passage of anti-LGBTIQ legislation and ballot measures. Given the nation wide reaction to the passage of Prop eight in California, it can hardly be surprising that the impact of these measures is significant not only to our civil rights, but to our emotional and mental well being.
