Thank you for a great article. As an adult volunteer at SMYRC for just one year now, I am continually amazed by the kids that come in to the center on drop-in nights. From the most bizarre to the most timid, they are all equal in their deep respect for each other and are empowered to enjoy a growing self-esteem. There is no way that their values, their intensity can't have an effect on us, their volunteers. As I said recently to a class of adult volunteers, one of the most valuable gifts that I have been given by these young people's examples is to value everyone I meet wherever I go with more openness and appreciation, looking for their good, than ever I did before coming to SMYRC.

What a wonderful article! As a SMYRC youth for two years (06-08) I have to say that the space is exactly as onyx described it. It is such a invaluable resource for youth not just based on gender and sexuality resources but also the youth empowerment model. I learned how to be a REAL leader in SMYRC, and how to lead by example. Both of which have been indispensable in my personal and professional life. But not only did the space provide all of those things, it also provided me with my first sense of real family. :o)

Living in Southern California now, I miss my SMYRC Family, but the impact that the space had on my life is forever.
